What Is The Hype About?

So, you’ve heard about this thing called a Kilter Board and you’re wondering what all the hype is about. Well, you’re in for a treat! This is a revolutionary training tool that will take your climbing skills to new heights. But what exactly is a Kilter Board?

What is it?

A Kilter Board is a state-of-the-art climbing wall that is specifically designed to help climbers improve their technique and strength. It features a grid of holds that can be adjusted to create an infinite number of climbing routes. The best part? The holds are all connected to a sophisticated lighting system that guides you through each climb.

Getting Set Up

Before you can start conquering the Kilter Board, you need to make sure you’re properly set up. First, find a local climbing gym or facility that has one available. Once you’ve found one, book a session and get ready for a thrilling adventure! Make sure to wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement. Don’t forget to bring your climbing shoes and chalk bag to ensure a good grip on the holds.

How to Master the Climb

The first step is to warm up properly to prevent any injuries. Start with some dynamic stretches to loosen up your muscles, followed by a few easy climbs to get your body warmed up. Once you’re ready, choose a route that suits your skill level and get on the wall.

When climbing the Kilter Board, remember to focus on your technique. Use your legs to push yourself up and rely on your upper body for balance and stability. Keep your body close to the wall and make precise movements to reach each hold. Don’t rush! Take your time to plan your moves and use the lights on the board to guide you through the route.

Rules for Climbing a Kilter Board

Just like any sport, there are rules to follow. First and foremost, always climb within your ability. It’s important to challenge yourself, but never push yourself beyond your limits. Secondly, be mindful of other climbers around you. Wait your turn and give others space to climb. Lastly, always use proper safety equipment, such as a harness and a helmet, if necessary.

Understanding the Lights

The lights are not just there for decoration. They serve a crucial role in guiding climbers through each route. The lights are programmed to indicate the difficulty of each hold. For example, green lights represent easy holds, while red lights indicate more challenging ones. As you progress through a route, the lights will guide you to the next hold, making it easier to plan your moves.

Adjusting the Angle

One of the great features of a Kilter Board is the ability to adjust the angle of the wall. By changing the angle, you can increase or decrease the difficulty of the climbs. If you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to begin with a lower angle to build up your strength and technique. As you become more confident, gradually increase the angle to challenge yourself further.

The Difference Between a Kilter Board and a Tension Board

You might be wondering, what’s the difference between a Kilter Board and a Tension Board? While both are popular training tools in the climbing world, they have some key differences. The main distinction lies in the holds. A Kilter Board features a wider variety of holds, including crimps, slopers, pockets, and pinches. On the other hand, a Tension Board primarily consists of wooden holds, offering a different feel and challenge.

Is a Kilter Board Easier than a Moon Board?

Now, let’s address the burning question on every climber’s mind: Is a Kilter Board easier than a Moon Board? Well, the answer is subjective. Both boards offer unique challenges and can benefit climbers of all skill levels. It ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some climbers may find the Kilter Board more enjoyable and accessible, while others may prefer the specific challenges and training opportunities provided by the Moon Board.

Eight weeks ago I was idly checking my social media when a friends post in our running group caught my eye.
‘I’m injured, does anyone want my Race Across Scotland place?’ As expected no one snatched up his offer as running 225 miles over Scotlands Southern Upland Way in under 100 hours appealed!
Funnily enough though a few people mentioned my name…
Whilst big epic running challenges are my thing, I felt with only six weeks notice and a lack of big training days, I wasn’t quite ready for such suffer fest.
I also had the slight complication that I had a 100 mile race two weeks before that one!

To cut a long story short I accepted the place, I only ran 40 miles of the 100 and arrived at Portpatrick on Friday the evening before the big race.

On Saturday 6am 163 of us set off heading East to push our bodies and minds to their limits.
As the miles clicked away we ate plenty and slept little but pushed on regardless.
Day 1, day 2, day 3 were a blur and eventually day 4 arrived.
Everyone was totally spent but with the finish line close (40+ miles) we needed to crack on and complete this epic journey.
Unfortunately many people had had to drop out along the course but 63 competitors pushed on.
After running for 85 hours and sleeping for less than 5 hours I eventually hit a pain barrier that tried to thwart my progress.
Blisters on four toes, the base of one foot and around both ankles brought me to a hobble/wobble!
I had a final nine miles to the finish and NOTHING was going to stop me. While I walked, hobbled, tripped and jogged, a few hardier runners passed me but we all had the same goal in mind.

I’m pleased to say that I crossed the finish line after 227 miles and 89 hours and raised an awesome £2100+ for Mind Charity (the JustGiving page is still open for donations https://bit.ly/DavesRAS24)

I had a good friend Dave Jones help me along the way with nutrition (pot noodles), kit (sweaty clothes) and encouragement (move it…). Without his tremendous support the outcome would not have been the same.

I’ve received so much positive support via emails, social media and personally that I can’t thank my supporters enough.

My years of climbing have taught me many things, but one of the most important things is ‘Stay Positive’.

Hope to see you at the climbing wall soon,

Dave Douglas
