Terry Wadsworth totally loved climbing.
He started in his school gym, moved on to the local wall, made a few mates with wheels, headed outdoors, and quickly climbed the grade ladder, even getting his name in a few climbing mags! Many moons have passed since then. Sadly, Terry’s outdoor days are almost over, but he still loves to throw himself at a real rock face now and again.
Terry was actually the very first member of Awesome Walls to sign up for our monthly climbing scheme many years ago. We were so happy someone wanted to pay us upfront to climb at our wall that we named the scheme after him: Terry Loves Climbing!
A week later, his girlfriend Tina joined up. We toyed with calling it Terry & Tina Totally Love Climbing, but it was a bit of a mouthful and didn’t quite sit right on the flyers we were printing…
So, with their permission, we officially renamed it TLC (Totally Love Climbing). It perfectly sums up what it means to commit to climbing with us every month.
The Honest Truth Behind the Scheme…
At first, we just thought a membership scheme would be a great bonus for our regular climbers, whose entry fees were stacking up because they visited so often. But it quickly became something much bigger.
If you scored our income from one to ten, our winter months were knocking on tens, while the summer months were hitting ones. But the bills and loans didn’t know about our tens and ones the way we did! However hard we tried to explain those highs and lows to our bank manager, you could still see the worry on his face.
I’ve never really thought of myself as a businessman, but TLC turned out to be a genius idea with a double edge. Climbers get unlimited visits, and our summers have come to life. Within two years our quietest months had climbed from a one to a three, and today they’re closer to a six. Our winters are still our busiest time, but the gap between the two has shrunk and our income now arrives steadily all year round. Paying monthly keeps our centres running smoothly, so you can keep climbing, whatever the weather

Having a predictable, stable income stream allows us to plan ahead. It means we can confidently invest in brand-new hold purchases, routine maintenance, and unexpected facility upgrades. The more customers we have on a TLC plan, the smoother the year runs for all of us, no matter what the weather does outside.
